What this module is about

UAVs are developing at a rapid pace. From small hobby devices through to professional commercial systems, there is a wide range of models, sizes and weight classes. Their capabilities keep expanding as well. 

Drones as a threat: The use of UAVs outside the legally permitted framework is becoming an increasing challenge for organisations, companies and operators of critical infrastructure. Buying one requires no specialist knowledge and is not restricted by any approval requirements.

UAV, UAS and UA – which is it?

When we colloquially talk about drones, what we actually mean is unmanned aircraft. UAV, UAS and UA are the common acronyms. You have certainly heard or read them before. Before we go deeper, here is a brief classification of these terms:

  • UAV - Unmanned Aerial Vehicle
  • UAS - Unmanned Aircraft System (that is, the system consisting of the aircraft and the control unit)
  • UA   - Unmanned Aircraft (the aircraft alone)

 

A drone over your site does not always mean an attack.

Not every drone event necessarily means an imminent attack. The following intentions may lie behind it:

1. Ignorance and negligence

A drone pilot will not always be aware of the legal framework. Some overflights trigger an alert chain, with high costs from business interruption, without any intent to cause harm.

2. Reconnaissance
Ahead of a break-in, a metal theft or an act of sabotage, the site is recorded from the air. Points of interest are fence lines, gates, camera positions and viewing directions, lighting, stock held outdoors, vehicle movements and guard patrol rhythms. A single overflight sequence lasting a few minutes delivers information that once required days or weeks of observation.
3. Industrial espionage
Footage of production facilities, prototypes in the yard, deliveries and construction progress. This is particularly relevant for production processes that cannot be seen from the ground but lie open to view from 60 metres up. It also covers footage of construction sites that allows conclusions to be drawn about capacity expansions.
4. Disruption of operations
A drone over a plant site forces reactions: outdoor work is interrupted, crane operations are stopped, staff are tied up. The damage here is caused not by the device but by your own response. That is precisely why a prepared response is worth more than technology.
5. Criminal damage
Dropping objects, colliding with installations, damaging sensitive equipment. The unintentional crash of a device over an outdoor storage area or a traffic route also belongs here.
6. Kinetic effect
The deliberate use of UAVs as a means of causing immense damage to property and/or people, for example through the use of explosives.

Lesson 2 — Introduction to drone technology

Guiding question: What is flying there, and what can it do?

Having seen in Lesson 1 why drones are relevant to your site, we now turn to the technology behind them. You will learn how to classify a device: how it is built, which obligations apply and what makes it detectable later on.

What awaits you:

  • Clarifying terms: keeping remote pilot and UAS operator properly apart — and why the two roles are held by different people within a company.
  • Six assemblies: propulsion, power, flight control, navigation, radio links and payload — each one leaves a trace that makes a device detectable.
  • Airframe types: multirotor, fixed-wing, VTOL hybrid and the rule “whatever can hover does not fly for long”.
  • Classes & categories: class label (C0–C6), subcategory (A1/A2/A3) and proof of competency — three levels that are constantly confused.
  • Obligations & practical cases: registration, proof of competency and insurance with three different thresholds — illustrated by worked examples.

Key message up front: the entire class logic describes the compliant user, not the attacker. That is exactly why a site later needs detection and not just legal knowledge.
